I wish I was reserving this space for a “Malygos down!” post, but sadly that’ll have to be saved for another week. We attempted Malygos for 2 hours on Sunday but couldn’t seem to get passed the gimmicky 3rd phase.
Our first 2 attempts we made it to phase 2 and after that we could consistently get to phase 3 which shows progress.. but as soon as we mount our drakes we just get pounded. I don’t think our main issue is actually flying the drakes, it’s just a matter of being unlucky. I also hate that blizzard would design a raid encounter that doesn’t test your players skills at their class but rely on a completely different mechanic (i.e. Gorefiend in Black Temple with the constructs.). It was a total bummer every single attempt to get to phase 3 with all 10 players alive only to watch people get picked off like flies as soon as we mount our drakes.
These are the issues I’m having, personally -
- I can’t find a comfortable camera angle to see the summoned sparks in phase 3 before it’s too late and get fried in them.
- I don’t have any combo points saved up when I get targeted for Surge of Power to cast Flame Shield.
- I hate gimmick encounters.
Our best attempt was 28%. Hopefully we can at least live on phase 3 this weekend. I posted in our GMOTD to keep trying the Aces High daily if anyone felt they weren’t comfortable flying the drakes, so we’ll see.
This is the most annoying encounter thus far Q.Q
I just did Oculus for the first time last night and I have to *sort of* agree with an annoyance with gimmicky encounters. It does make me feel *dumber* than I think I am just because I know I’d live if I were on the ground doing my normal warlocky thing. Same with the rest of my group doing their jobs.
At the same time, how cool is it to say “hey you guys need to go practice how to fly a drake…”
I mean, gimmicky, yes. Something that breaks the mold?
Could it be done better… probably. Do I like the thought trying to come up with something different… yes. Do I get annoyed at the gimmicky nature of trying to fight a boss on a drake… absolutely.
So I guess that leaves me with a feeling of “meh”. I like watching my character do the things on the screen, but I’m not sure I like controlling said character. Does that make any sense?
Yeah I’m sure Blizzard is just keeping things different but to base the success of an encounter on something people don’t normally do is kind of lame, IMO.
